What is internal linking?

The term “internlenking” refers to the strategic placement of internal links on a website. We will return to this in more detail further down the page. First, the basics: Internal links are links that connect different pages within the same website. The purpose is to create a way for readers to click through to other pages on the site. Technically, an internal link consists of the clickable part (anchor text) that is visible on the webpage, and a reference in the code to which page the link should point to. One example is this internal link, which you can click if you want to read more terms and definitions related to marketing, advertising and SEO. Here, the clickable part is a descriptive text, and in the code it is specified that the link should go to https://solidmedia.no/fagbegreper/ The “opposite” of internal links is external links (backlinks), which you can read more about here.

Why is effective internal linking important?

Effective use of internal links is important because it makes your website more user-friendly. Visitors can consistently find relevant and useful links at the right time. This keeps them on the site longer while helping them quickly access the information and answers they are looking for. In addition, strong internal linking plays a key role in SEO-arbeidet, because Google and Bing’s “spidere” bruker lenker i webcrawlingen. First, the crawl must actually be able to discover all the pages on the site, and internal linking is then used to assess which pages are most important and provide relevant, high-quality value for your audience.

How to create effective internal linking?

Internal linking can be extensive, so it’s smart to start by mapping out which pages you have on your website and what topics each page covers. Next, you should identify which pages should be the main pages for each topic, and which ones can serve as subpages. Make sure all subpages link “up” to the main page, and that the main page links “down” to the subpages wherever it’s relevant and natural. This content structure is called topic clustering, and you can read more about it here.
