What is content marketing?

Content marketing is a marketing strategy that engages potential customers through relevant content. The purpose of content marketing is to build long-term customer relationships that will provide value and good business results.

First and foremost, it's about creating a plan that covers all the content the company wants to create and publish. This is called a content strategy. As soon as the strategy is ready, it's time to start producing the planned content, i.e. content production.

But, why content marketing? What's important about it?

Unlike traditional advertising, where the recipient receives information they haven't actively sought out themselves (e.g. ad banners in connection with Black Week and the like), it's safe to say that content marketing is in many ways a smarter approach. By offering relevant and interesting content in channels where you reach the desired target group, you encourage customers to visit you.

The content you share should show how your products or services can meet the needs of your target audience and be a solution to their problem. In addition, you give the reader the opportunity to learn more about your products and services, who you are and what your company stands for. This will naturally help people to see you as a credible company that knows what you offer. In this way, you will be able to increase conversions and build customer loyalty!

Examples of content marketing

Content marketing can be produced physically as content in magazines and newspapers, but in recent years it has become more common to communicate content marketing via digital platforms. Here are some examples of types of content marketing:

  • Social media: Inspire and communicate to the target audience by sharing valuable and interesting content.
  • Blog: Articles, guides, etc. that can help provide the reader with professional inputs and information on relevant topics, which overall should improve the customer journey.
  • Podcast: Here you have the opportunity to share knowledge and experiences about your field, spar with current guests, etc.
  • Video: Show what you have to offer your target audience through short snippets.
  • Graphics: Make sure you have some graphic elements that complement a text, for example.

What does a content marketer do?

A content marketer, usually referred to as a content producer, works to plan and produce content for different channels. The job of a content producer is to plan relevant content over a specific period of time (content strategy), often using a publishing schedule to keep track at all times. Then it's time to produce the content in the form of text, graphic design or video (content production).

An important part of a content producer's job is to adapt the content to the various channels, i.e. to ensure that both the format and message fit where the content is to be published. People expect a completely different form of communication on Snapchat than the target group on LinkedIn, for example.
